I didn't want to watch the 2022 adaptation of Persuasion. I haven't liked any previous adaptation. Sad woman in a bad situation mopes her way back into an old suitor's heart. Dour. Morose.
This new one is wry and sparkling. You know I love it when they break the fourth wall. Fleabag, House of Cards. Gentleman Jack. Here I have paused the stream just as our plucky heroine hears that Captain Wentworth will join their party. That screen grab is a split second before her eyes bulge with secret joy.
For some reason IMDB only gives it 5.8 stars. That must be because it is set in Georgian society, but updated with clever anachronisms, like playlists and emoticons. The commenters in the Goofs section did not appreciate that. I did, though.
Check it out if you aren't a purist.
Ack! Now I have to read the book so that I can see this movie! From the trailer, the movie looks really good, and I am not a purist. Except I am a purist about reading the book before watching the movie. (Of Austen's works, I have read P&P, S&S, and Emma, but not Persuasion.)
I am trying to decide if I can watch the movie of "All the Light We Cannot See" because I fear watching it will destroy the images I have set up in my head while reading the book.

CHM - It always seems to me that movies and books have to be by definition entirely different works of art. The question is how much of ourselves do we mix in with the authors intent to make that new work of art?
