You may remember this post from 2020 on the theft of the ruby slippers. It links to a firewall behind which is a loooong Washington Post article. The article ended with the sting that recovered the slippers, but the thief was still at large.
Finally, the thief has been discovered. His motive? He thought the rubies were real. He planned to pry 0ff the “rubies” and sell them, but a mob fence set him straight. So he gave them away in disgust.
Now he is getting off without any jail time because he’s dying. And, I suppose, because the exposure of his stupidity is punishment enough. He was convinced the rubies must be real because the shoes were insured for millions. To be fair, he’s never seen The Wizard of Oz. I guess if he didn’t know how pivotal the shoes are, the insurance amount might be suspect.
Sadly, the shoes won’t be going back to the museum they came from. They have an exciting provenance now. Who knows where they’ll end up.
