Well, I picked the paint for the Virgin Unpainted Bathroom, sea foam green, and then Gary nixed it.
So I picked some other colors (oddly, all in the Martha Stewart egg family), and I was going to wake Gary up to solicit his opinion, but one color was the clear winner: High Style Beige.
Bottom center is the sea foam, then to its right is the High Style Beige.
I had laid down some white primer last week when I was cutting in, so I painted over the primer and sea foam.
Halfway through I realized that the painter coming this week probably hates to cut in as much as I, so his edge is the one that matters, as it will be second. Ah, well, at least I had my fantasy for a few days.
So here's a photo of the old virtually bare mottled drywall, which you can see behind the snow white primer, with some High Style Beige slapped in the center of it.
Confusing? Here's why: THE HIGH STYLE BEIGE IS THE EXACT COLOR as the mottled old drywall.
You know what would have been nice? Sea foam.
... sigh.
Can you ask Gary again, with a different set of paint chips where sea foam green is the most neutral-looking among them? (warning, may result in him requesting lime green...)

KC - He would again say it "clashes," (which it does not) because it is not a different value of the same color. He does not believe in complementary colors.

Aha. Yes. I understand that. Could you maybe figure out a way for him to find out about color theory on his own and mansplain it to you?

KC - hilarious! I bet that would work. And really all I would need to do is say, "Color theory is really hard, you wouldn't understand it."

I mean. It actually *is* kind of hard, esp. for people who have always been tone-on-tone people (hi, I'm bad at knowing which colors will go together until I see them and it took me two years of middle school to accept denim as a neutral...). And he *might* not understand it but might just rush you with indignant samples of all these people who are *paid art people* and just see how *wrong* they are getting it all and how ridiculous it is.
But maybe... just maybe...

KC - Doubtful, really. What I need to do is find a color that is just hideous, paint a wall that color, then the next color I try will be gorgeous.

Pepto-bismol pink used to be traditional in bathrooms...

KC - I actually have a whole quart of that in the basement.

... I mean, what else are you going to use it for? ;-)
