I had my credit card in hand, ready to hand it to the young girl at the Mcdonalds drive-through.
Instead of taking my card she pushed a device at me.
I held my card, looking for a spot to swipe or shove the card. Shove still seems foreign to me. I had just received a chip/shove card when the pandemic hit.
"Flat!" she said, cheerfully.
I pinched the edge of the card and held it out flat over the device.
"Flat!" she giggled.
I tapped the card on the device.
"No, flat!" she laughed. "Flat!"
I held it perfectly flat in the air and she snuggled the device under the card and I heard a beep.
"Oh, I see," I said, "Flat." Then I apologized for being old.
"No you're fine," she said, proving that she did know words other than "Flat."
... I am suddenly feeling very old.
(also: I liked it better when we did swipe instead of being able to just tap, and when we had to sign or put in our pin number. Harder to scan the card from our pockets in a crowd, easier to contest charges with fake signatures. But I guess I exclusively buy stuff online now anyway, which is not a security improvement over tap-to-pay, so there's that.)

KC - I remember how back in the day credit card signatures meant something. Ah, so long ago.
