I finally took the first step toward calling Dave's surprise cancer doctor, I called the records department.
- I called them once and hung up on the answering machine.
- Then I drafted everything I wanted to say and edited it for length.
- Then I called them back and read my statement to the answering machine. I tried to sound natural.
In Saint Louis I would expect an answer in a week, but this is Albuquerque, and so I'll hear in two and a half months. Or, possibly, not. I have my theory, that he was in denial that he could die of cancer. He might have thought it would be easier on me if he kept quiet about his complaints, only that is completely antithetical to his personality.
It might just need to be a mystery.
I have exactly zero idea how medical records release for deceased persons go, but good work on doing what you can do, and yep, it may end up being a mystery, or maybe you will find out something. But you'll know you did what you could to find out, so there is that?
Also: drafting and editing for length: clever. I should do that more.
