I find it reassuring, somehow, to demonstrate the progress I am making with the painting. All the flaws are out there, and hopefully there are fewer and fewer errors as time goes on.
I am not as confident with the guitar, though. My husband just told a family member that I can play the guitar “like a professional!” No, I said, I can play the guitar like a five year old, searching for notes, not at tempo at all . For my latest flaw, my right hand gradually scoots away from the guitar ... hole (I don’t know the name), and everything sounds leaden and plunky.
So, I had to give a command performance and MY GOD I WAS BAD. I just froze up. I went from being a halting five year old to a halting two year old, fumbling with a too-large guitar, playing at half-speed, doesn’t know the name of the guitar hole. (I just looked it up. It’s the sound hole. I was close.)
I then went home and played better than I ever have in my life, alone.
