Gary and I have our own family Super Bowl ritual. The most important part of the ritual is that we reject all party invitations and spend the night, just the two of us, eating poorly and watching the television. I watch commercials and Gary watches the game, as opposed to our usual practice of ignoring commercials and ignoring football every other day of the year.
This year I thought we could break free from tradition and benefit from our disinterest. The Saint Louis aquarium has been very crowded since opening last December: I thought we could visit late in the day on Super Bowl Sunday. We could even get back home by the time the game was over and all the traffic accidents began.
Sadly, Sunday is the one day the aquarium is not open late. It was a damn good plan, though. I’ll have to find a better way to dodge some crowds next year.
