I completely forgot Thursday was my 27 year anniversary until Tuesday, when a friend mentioned there we had two days till Flag Day. I didn't even know there was a flag day until I scheduled my wedding for the same day. At the time, Dad said, "Now you'll never forget your anniversary."
I laughed. Who could forget a wedding anniversary?
Had it not been for Flag Day, I would have been doomed. And I had such confidence Gary had forgotten too, I decided on my 27th anniversary present. I didn't want sculpture, the "Modern" 27th anniversary gift, I wanted the satisfaction of telling Gary HE had totally forgotten our anniversary.
It was a difficult two days. I had to hide the anniversary card his parents sent us, along with the check. (There are big financial rewards in the S______ family for staying married 27 years.) I had to insist we watch Kathy! (painful) and Chelsea Lately so we'd be awake at midnight when I could claim victory.
"Look at that, it's 12:01 already. Looks like you made it through the whole day without remembering it was OUR TWENTY-SEVENTH WEDDING ANNIVERSARY."
I was still dancing the victory dance when he called me a bad name and pushed me on to the bed. Where we promptly fell asleep.
